Britain has chosen to retain the pound sterling (£) as its currency standard, not willing as yet to adopt the Euro.

The money system itself is similar to that of the United States, in that

100 pence (p) equal 1 pound (£),

just as

100 pennies equal 1 dollar.

However, £1 is not equivalent in value to $1! For a rough comparison, it takes 2 dollars to equal 1 pound.

For example, an item costing 4£ at a London shop, will show up as about an $8 charge on a credit card bill.
